In 1850, General Mariano Vallejo offered the California State Legislature to build a state capitol on 156 acres of donated land along with $370,000 toward costs to build a new city called “Eureka.” A state-wide referendum on the matter was held in late 1850, and the proposal was accepted in its entirety, with one change - the city would be called "Vallejo," after its founder.
